Terms of use

The agreement

Linger is made and published by Spice Labs (Neel Chary). These terms are the agreement between you and us for using it, and they take effect the moment you download the app. If you do not accept them, do not use Linger — and if you have already paid for it, write to [email protected].

Two other documents sit alongside this one and are part of the same arrangement: the Linger privacy policy, which describes what the app does and does not collect, and Apple's own terms, which govern the App Store account you downloaded through and every payment you make.

Your licence

You get a personal, non-exclusive licence to use Linger on the Apple devices you own or control, under the rules of the Apple Media Services Terms of Sale. That is a right to use the app, not ownership of it — the app itself, its name, and its design stay ours.

Within that, do not decompile or reverse-engineer the app, do not redistribute or resell it, and do not remove or obscure any notice inside it. Everything you write in Linger is yours; we have no copy of it and claim no rights over it.

Linger Plus

Linger is free to download, and free keeps one open reminder on your Lock Screen. Linger Plus removes that limit and is sold three ways inside the app:

• A monthly auto-renewing subscription.
• A yearly auto-renewing subscription.
• A lifetime purchase, paid once, with nothing to cancel.

All three unlock the same thing. Prices are set per storefront and are always the ones shown on the paywall at the moment you buy — the app reads them from the App Store rather than storing them, so what you see there is the price you pay in your own currency.

The two subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours of the period ending. If we ever change a subscription price, Apple asks you to agree to the new price before it takes effect; if you do not, the subscription simply stops renewing.

Restoring is always available. Restore purchases sits on the paywall and in Settings, and returns Plus on any device signed in to the Apple Account that bought it.

The free trial

The yearly plan carries a seven-day free trial. Nothing is charged when it starts. On the seventh day it becomes a paid year unless you cancel before then, and the app sends you a reminder the day before that happens so it cannot turn into a charge you did not expect.

Apple allows one introductory offer per subscription group per Apple Account, so the trial is available once. If you have used it before, the app shows you the plain yearly price instead — you will not be offered a free week you cannot have.

Cancelling and refunds

Cancel in Settings ▸ your name ▸ Subscriptions on your device. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Plus until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Every payment for Linger is processed by Apple, not by us. That means refunds are Apple's to grant and we cannot issue one, however much we might want to — request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. Write to us anyway if a charge looks wrong; we can usually tell you what happened, which tends to help the request.

What Linger is not

Linger is a reminder app. It is not an alarm, a medical device, or a safety system, and it should not be the only thing standing between you and something that matters.

The reason is worth stating plainly rather than burying. Lock Screen cards are Live Activities, and iOS decides when they may run: the system ends one after about eight hours, and Linger replaces each card shortly before that so the reminder stays put. If your phone is off, out of battery, or gets no execution time for long enough, a card will disappear and nothing in the app can prevent it. A backstop notification is scheduled for exactly that case, but notification delivery is the system's decision too, and turning notifications off removes it.

So: do not rely on Linger alone for medication, medical appointments, legal or financial deadlines, or anything else where a missed reminder causes real harm. Use an alarm, or something with a person attached to it.

Acceptable use

There is not much to say here, because Linger has no accounts, no server, no shared content and no way to reach another user. Do not use the app to break the law, and do not try to interfere with it or with the App Store purchase flow behind it. That is the whole list.

Warranty and liability

Linger is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. We do not promise the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that a reminder will always appear — see what Linger is not, above.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Spice Labs is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of Linger, including anything you forgot. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you actually paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing here removes rights you have under the consumer law of the country you live in. If a term above is unenforceable where you are, the rest still stands.

Apple's role

This agreement is between you and Spice Labs, not Apple, and we alone are responsible for Linger and its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app or to handle any claim about it — product liability, a failure to meet legal requirements, or a claim that the app infringes someone's intellectual property are all ours to answer.

Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo, and are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

Changes and contact

We will update this page if the terms change, and bump the date at the top. A change that affects what you have already paid for — the price of a live subscription, or what Plus includes — is a material change and will be stated here and in the app before it applies. Continuing to use Linger after a change means you accept it.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
